経営学の名著を読むバーナード『経営者の役割』（3）

Chester Irving Barnard, The Functions of the Executive, Harvard University Press, 1938, 1968 (30th anniversary ed.).

「組織の三要素」（elements of an organization）として有名な、組織の成立条件については、次のように書かれています。

An organization comes into being when (1) there are persons able to communicate with each other (2) who are willing to contribute action (3) to accomplish a common purpose. The elements of an organization are therefore (1) communication; (2) willingness to serve; and (3) common purpose. （p.82）
（①お互いにコミュニケーションできる人々がおり、②彼らが喜んで活動に貢献し、③共通目的を達成しようとするときに、組織は生まれる。したがって、組織の要素は、①コミュニケーション、②貢献意欲、③共通目的である。）

「貢献意欲」（willingness）については、次のように書かれています。

Willingness, in the present connection, means self-abnegation, the surrender of control of personal conduct, the depersonalization of personal action. Its effect is cohesion of effort, a sticking together. （p.84）
（ここでいう意欲は、「自制」「個人の行動の自由の放棄」「個人の行動の非人格化」を意味する。それによって、まとまりのある努力がなされ、結束をもたらす。）

「目的」（purpose）については、次のように書かれています。

Individual motive is necessarily an internal, personal, subjective thing; common purpose is necessarily an external, impersonal, objective thing .（p.89）
（個人の動機は、必然的に内的・個人的・主観的なものである。共通目的は、必然的に外的・非個人的・客観的なものである。）

「コミュニケーション」（communication）については、次のように書かれています。

communication would occupy a central place, because the structure , extensiveness, and scope of organization are almost entirely determined by communication techniques. （p.91）
（組織の構造・大きさ・範囲は、ほぼすべてコミュニケーション技術で決まるので、コミュニケーションは中心的な問題になる。）
